And we don't blame them, it's very hard to be good in programming and in marketing.
The smart devs understand that there is a need for app marketing, this is why you read this page after all, but very few know from where to start. Even worse they spend money creating useless campaigns that give them 1 install per $10 spend.

Because we are sure that you'll like the book, we give you a sneak peak into the first chapter:

Before you begin

Advertising mobile apps has few rules, lots of opportunities and things change fast.

While I was working as a freelancer, I often encountered clients that wanted to start with an app that had banners + in-app purchases or worse, a paid app directly. They broke the first rule of this book.

Rule nr. 1

Do not try to get $ until you have at least 10.000 users.

Let me explain. If you start to sell things too fast what you will get is something like this.

Requests: 1000 for you ad
Clicks 10
RPM $0.45
Revenue: $0.5

New installs per day: 5
Change of appearing in top new apps page: inexistent

The revenue you’ll get if you start too soon is so little, that it doesn’t justify the trouble.

What you should be concentrating about is RATINGS

1. Make premium features free.
Everybody loves a good app that is free. Chances that you’ll get good ratings are increased a lot

2. Don’t put banners
We all hate them. Unless the banner gives us a very good product that we really need (very small chance) we hate it. It takes space in the small space of the mobile device. It is ugly, it is intrusive etc. Usually, you receive 0.5 stars less in rating if you have banners in the app.

3. VERY IMPORTANT: Ask users when they exist the app to rate it:

Example for android:

SharedPreferences prefs = mContext.getSharedPreferences("HasRated", 0);
has_rated = prefs.getBoolean("rated", false);

if (!has_rated) {
 DialogInterface.OnClickListener dialogClickListener = new DialogInterface.OnClickListener() {

  public void onClick(DialogInterface dialog, int which) {
   switch (which) {
    case DialogInterface.BUTTON_POSITIVE:

    Intent browserIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW,
    Uri.parse("https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=xxxxxxxxxxx"));
    startActivity(browserIntent);

SharedPreferences prefs = mContext.getSharedPreferences("HasRated", 0);
SharedPreferences.Editor editor = prefs.edit();
editor.putBoolean("rated", true).commit();

break;

case DialogInterface.BUTTON_NEGATIVE:
  finish();
break;
}
}
};

AlertDialog.Builder builder = new AlertDialog.Builder(this);
builder.setMessage(“Please rate the app if you liked it ”).setPositiveButton(“Yes”, dialogClickListener)
.setNegativeButton(“Later”, dialogClickListener).show();

} else {
 finish();
}

what this code does:
- Remembers if the user clicked the rate button. There’s no need to re-display the ask for rating dialog if the user already clicked the rate button (we can’t verify if he/she rated or not).
if he didn’t rate, display a dialog asking him/her to rate. something like

““Please rate the app if you liked it ” Ok | Later
on “Ok” - redirect user to rating page & store the “has_rated” variable not to display the dialog again.

4. Target USA

This will give you the most income from all other countries.

5. Use family members for testing

If you’re non-tech wife can’t navigate and use the app easy, it means it has a problem of usability. Address those issues before you publish it.

best practice: put it when user clicks the back button or want’s to exit the app.
optional: remember how many times the user started the app. you may ask the user to rate it after the 5th run of the app.

AVOID COSTLY MISTAKE #1:

Pay for ratings.
There are users on fiverr.com & other websites that are willing for $5 to give you ~25 positive ratings.

My experience:
I received 25 positive ratings from 2 devices, at an interval of 1-2 minutes one after another with dummy google accounts. Result: the app didn’t changed at all in new downloads. It’s like those reviews didn’t even count.
If you pay for reviews, make sure that:
they are from real persons, they have time interval between them. They are from different geographical locations and they are not all 5 stars.
This is expensive and almost impossible to get. Better be 100% legal in this reviews.

yesterday I received an email saying:

we sell 10.000 reviews for apps. Contact us at ….. You'll simple when you'll get emails like this

The mechanics of reviews:

A user will leave a review on your app for the following reason:[...continues]
